The U.S. used to have a pretty efficient electrical rail system. You used to be able to get around New England, for example, by electric rail. Los Angeles, which is now a transportation monstrosity, had a very efficient electric rail system. All of these things were destroyed by very conscious state-corporate programs to drive the economy toward wasteful use of fossil fuels. Another massive social engineering project was to drive the population out of the cities into the suburbs. I don’t object to living in the suburbs, In fact, I do. But from the point of view of the economy, it’s just crazy as it’s now organized. You can’t live in the suburbs without having two cars in a family.
